Marketing and marketing in Spain

Post by Bappy »

We start with Marketing: an average of 29,300 monthly searches for the term marketing . And for Marketing? It is surprising that marketing only has 2,200 searches compared to 29,300 for marketing . We are talking about almost 10 times more. In Spain the term marketing leaves marketing knockout. In the same way, that the term marketing is hardly used, it only presents 550 average monthly searches. Let's recap by taking a look at the following table: Average monthly searches by country (KWFinder) Marketing Marketing Marketing Mexico 92.700 102.000 4.000 Colombia 45.100 6.300 13.700 spain 29.300 2.200 550 The difference between these three brother countries is surprising! After appreciating this situation with data, let 's see what the academics of the Spanish language and advertising say about the use of anglicisms in Marketing and Advertising. Anglicisms in Advertising, a problem or an evolution? Before getting into this part, let's remember what an anglicism is . Anglicisms are linguistic loans from the English language to another language. Many times they are a product of poor translations of printed material or spoken sequences, and other times they are forced due to the lack of an appropriate word to translate a specific term or word. This means that we must differentiate between necessary anglicisms (and which enrich our language) and unnecessary ones (which are the problem in themselves). Without going any further, the RAE, Royal Spanish Academy, pronounces itself on marketing anglicism on its Twitter:

"The RAE prefers the term marketing or marketing, followed by marketing and, finally, marketing due to its extensive use." Thus, the order of preference for the supreme queen of the language would be as follows: Marketing or marketing. Marketing. Marketing. To address the issue of anglicisms in Marketing and Advertising, in 2016 a first debate was held entitled "Is Spanish spoken phone database
in advertising?" . This meeting was attended by the RAE and the AP (Academy of Advertising), which is firmly pronounced on the matter with the following sentence: «Spanish is seriously threatened by the invasion of English and advertising is one of the main ways to facilitate that colonization. For this reason, the RAE and the Advertising Academy want to raise awareness of this problem among advertisers, companies and society in general.» —Advertising Academy So, are we helping to facilitate the colonization of an invading language? We have good reason to say that we do. We only have to look at our day to day to realize the number of anglicisms that we use in our profession. Continuing with the first debate, we must emphasize that it was attended by academics, writers, journalists, professionals and specialists from the advertising sector who have analyzed the presence of English in the field of advertising.

The following important topics were discussed: English in advertising, examples of the excessive use of English in advertisements in Spain. First session: the abuse of English in Advertising. How to reduce it? How to promote the use of Spanish in Advertising? The first session was opened by the writer Álex Grijelmo, who is critical and forceful in the face of a solution to the abuse of English in Advertising. We cannot stop the invasion of English, but we can support and protect our language by increasing the knowledge and culture of the speakers, especially through reading. Advertising by itself does not contribute but it does transport the cultural fact. —Miguel Angel Furones If you wish, you can watch this important debate in full: After appreciating that the Advertising Agency and the RAE are looking for a solution to the possible problem of linguistic invasion, we are going to analyze some of the data that they offer us in this presentation . Examples of excessive use of English in Advertising and Marketing The phrase that follows may be common in our day to day as advertising professional
